The Why of the Real Jewish Roots – It’s Not Jewish roots – It’s What’s Actually Fundamentally & Foundationally Jewish
What – very much (!) – needs to be restored today, is not today’s “Jewish Roots”; but rather, how very totally rooted in Hebrew is the heart of Yeshua. Here’s how you benefit from Jewish roots in finding more of God or finding God. You benefit by learning as accurately and authentically from the Word of God and deeply as God and Yeshua intend for you. You benefit by growing and drawing closer to and finding more of God and finding God through His Word!
Over 75% of the Bible is in Hebrew, making it not Jewish Roots, but rather what is fundamentally and foundationally Jewish. Yeshua is a Jew in Israel. The Twelve he personally sends out are all Jews from Galilee as he was. (Judas was from Judea). Yeshua later calls another Jew – Saul of Tarsus – better known as Paul. Paul tells us he was a Jew and Pharisee who studied with a great 1st-century Jewish teacher in Jerusalem. The six Letter writers, Paul, the author of Hebrews (probably Apollos (?), rather than Paul), Jacob (not “James” as we explain), Peter, Judah (not “Jude” as we explain), and Yochanon (“the LORD (is) gracious” “John’s” original Hebrew name) are all Jews for whom Hebrew, if not their spoken language, is their spiritual and religious language!
Paul does not teach Gentiles today’s Jewish roots. But rather, Paul overall emphasizes acquiring and putting into action the exercise of godly attributes towards others, that are fundamentally and foundationally Hebrew & Jewish rooted about following Yeshua!
The letters are all written by Jews with a very deeply rooted Hebrew & Jewish heart! (Possible exception ironically, the author of Hebrews).
As we point out and try to stress in our teaching, as much interest as there is today in Jewish Roots, it is really not at all about Jewish Roots. Why? “Roots” speaks of the beginning of something but tends to imply that’s something then developed away from its root.
Though unfortunately – and with profoundly tragic consequences for the Jewish People throughout history – it’s not that what followed post-Biblically “broke away” from its “Jewish Roots”. Post-Biblical Western Tradition didn’t merely break from Jewish Roots, it broke from what is fundamentally and foundationally rooted and based on a Hebrew and Jewish understanding, approach, and action. That meant and resulted in breaking away from not only the Jewish Brothers, but also the Jewish people!
Yeshua does not teach – nor emphasize – today’s “Jewish Roots”; the “Festivals” and Judaica.
In short, Koine Greek is the language of the 1st-century Roman Empire. However, except for perhaps Apollos (if he wrote Hebrews) it is a tertiary (third) language for the Letter writers, behind Hebrew and its very close sister language Aramaic. Yeshua’s languages? Hebrew and Aramaic. Cf. Yochanon 20:16 etc.; esp. Acts 26:14-15! Yeshua prayed to the Father in Hebrew. What is the meaning and significance for you? Yeshua is of Hebrew heart; not Greek mind. Cf. Mt. 1:1, v. 6, Lk. 1:30-34, 19:41, 2 Tim. 2:8 et al. Cf. esp. (!) Rev. 5:5 & 22:16! What more need be said?

This picture, of a very ancient olive tree in Israel, is symbolic of Paul’s very Hebrew and Jewish roots-based metaphor in Romans 11:17-24. The in-grafting of the individual Gentile follower of Yeshua into the “richness of the fatness of the root” of Israel, i.e., the Jewish People. Rom. 11:17-20, vss. 17-18. That is, the Gentile’s real source of spiritual richness, is what Israel has received.
As a quick but very “key” note: Paul switches from Jew to Israel in Romans 9-11, because to refer to the Jewish People as Israel is the most reverential – and heartfelt – way for a Jew to do so. Paul’s change from Jew to Israel in Rom. 9-11 fits the context of Rom. 9-11 perfectly.
Paul then changes to using Jew again, in Rom. 12, 14-15.
Much confusion has occurred, in short, because Western Tradition especially and also individual followers of Yeshua, are unaware or miss Paul’s change from Jew to Israel in Rom. 9-11. Also especially, why he does so! Cf. also Rom. 9:1-5, vss. 2-3.
