B’reshis – “In Beginning” God’s Rushing Movement into Time

Gen. 1:1-6:8

Please note: while the weekly Torah and Prophet readings are long established and fixed, those now including the RCS (Renewed Covenant Scriptures) that Jewish Brothers have designated in the last few decades, are by no means uniform.

As we always seek to give you things not available elsewhere (that we know of), we will instead list verses from the weekly Torah reading cited in the RCS, based on a Greek text.

These will be something obviously drawn from the Torah, such as Yochanon 1:1-18 drawing from Genesis 1. Or, those verses of Torah in the weekly portion that are particularly cited, i.e., having at least 2 or 3 direct citations in the RCS.

As much as we would like to list all of the Torah verses in the weekly portion cited in the RCS, it would be too long!

We are in the process of providing both original information and we hope enlightenment on each of the weekly Torah portions for you. God willing, we will be able to finish it!

Please note also: connections between a Torah verse and that of the RCS may not always seem readily apparent in English.

God willing, the following will help you see just how much of the Torah was utilized either in the words of our wonderful Mashiach Yeshua, or under inspiration of the Ruach Hakodesh (original name of the Holy Spirit as we explain in our teaching) in writing the RCS.

Yeshua cites from the Torah about 167 times; 50 from Deuteronomy. Paul cites from the Torah between 190-195 times.

Please remember also: Jewish practice in the first century was that citing part of a verse implied the whole verse. Sometimes the direct citation may be just part of a Torah verse.

RCS (Renewed Covenant Scriptures) Connections are listed at the end of each weekly Outline and Insights

Torah Chapter Highlights – Hebrew Insights – RCS (Renewed Covenant Scriptures) Connections (at end)

Genesis 1-2 Creation

  • Creation of Adam & Eve, and the beginning of the Divine – human partnership; the appearance of the Serpent Gen. 2-3

Insight: You should please be sure to notice that Yochanon 1:1-18 (called The Prologue) is very correctly said by scholars to clearly draw from the style of the Hebrew of B’reshis (Gen. 1).

Yochanon’s KG is very very Semitic.

Also, Yochanon 1:1 mirrors the very opening of B’reshis. Though both are translated with “the” beginning, in neither the Hebrew & Koine Greek is there “the”.  It’s used in English translation, otherwise it’s awkward.

As the Torah does not specify when Creation took place, so too Yochanon does not identity any beginning for what is more deeply known as the divine wisdom, will, protection, teaching, KG Logos translated Word, i.e., the Mashiach Yeshua.

We should note that Yochanon 1:1 does not use “estin” “is”. “In (the) beginning is the specific subject named, the Word”…. But rather “en” “was”, i.e. “In beginning was the specific subject named, the Word”… (I rendered the KG. A number of commentators think Yochanon, being very very Semitic, draws on an Aramaic idea he expresses in KG by Logos.

As commentators correctly point out, before whenever Creation begins, the divine wisdom, will, protection, teaching Word already was.

The noted evangelical scholar Murray J. Harris in a book very extensively analyzing the KG of several verses that may speak of the divinity of the Mashiach, at the end summarizes with this. The divinity of Yeshua is best seen in the angel of the LORD in the Torah and Hebrew Bible.

NOTE: Haftorah readings listed are those traditionally set for Jews outside of Israel. For Jews in Israel, there’s a slight variance.

In short, the Haftorah readings were begun more than 160 years before Yeshua.  When Jews were banned in Israel by a then foreign ruler from reading the Torah, portions from the Prophets that related to the Torah were selected. This was done as a way of remembering what was in the Torah.

Gen. 2-3  Adam & Eve

  • The appearance of the Serpent
  • Adam & Chava “Life” “Eve” are one
  • Their innocent nakedness
  • The Serpent’s devious “nakedness”
  • The Serpent lives up to the meaning of his name
  • Eve responds to the Serpent – what it leads to
  • What is lost

Insight: Serpent in Hebrew is from the verb “charm, beguile; change future through magic”. That is exactly what he thought he was doing. “The” in Hebrew more deeply indicates “the positive bearer of existence/actuality”.

The Serpent was not “a” Serpent or a myth; he exists.

One reason the Hebrew names of the Mashiach and the Ruach Hakodesh (Holy Spirit) are so important?

In Hebrew, they each have “the” as part of their name. Thus each is identified as the “positive bearer of existence/actuality”. They are not myths. They definitely exist. They definitely are the bearers of existence/actuality.

Gen. 4  Kayin “Acquire” “Cain”  &  Hevel “Transitory, Brief Breath” “Abel”

  • The choices each brother makes – and why – God is gracious to Kayin – What Kayin does with his second chance

InsightIn Kayin “Cain” “Acquire” what did he acquire? Did he acquire godly character traits and attributes and exercise them towards his brother – as he should have? Unfortunately, no. Kayin acquired “Self”. Unlike his brother he didn’t bring before the LORD what was specially chosen. Yet God acted very graciously towards Kayin; giving him a second chance and encouraging Kayin.

Did Kayin abandon his “Self” and work to improve his spiritual level and acquire godly character traits? Very sadly and tragically no.

Kayin not only murdered his brother; by not severing his “Self” in the process he also severed his relationship with the LORD. Those are those like Kayin in the Bible who tend to focus on “Self”. We see that ultimately things don’t go well for them….

One of the common traits of all the greats of the Bible – and the ultimate example of course is by our wonderful Mashiach Yeshua – cf. Yochanon 15:11-13 v.12, Phpns. 2:5-11 (also an Hebraic-type hymn) – is that they have no Self! They do see that they are to safeguard and protect their brother. So are we! If our Self gets in the way of doing that then let’s put our Self to death. Let’s honor Yeshua’s life and “acquire” the character of Yeshua esp. – and Paul – and be concerned for safeguarding and protecting our brother/sister!

Gen. 5  The Offspring of Adam

  • What their names – in Hebrew – deeply and uniquely tell us about them

Gen. 6:1-8  Man’s Tragic Spiritual Descent

  • The pain it causes in the Heart of the LORD. What decision the LORD will now make – and why
